The betta fish /ˈbɛtə/ is a genus of small, often colorful freshwater fishes in the class of rays (Osphronemiidae). A notable species is the Betta Samurai.

[1] However, the better-known species in this genus are the Siamese fighting fish group (Betta splendens, Betta imbellis, Betta mahachaiensis, Betta smaragdina).

All betta species are small fish, but they vary greatly in size, from less than 3.5 cm (1 inch) for B. chanoides to 12.5 cm (5 inches) for B. akarensis.
